Henri Matisse, La tristesse du roi, 1952 (The Sadness of the King)
Matisse was born on 31st December 1869.
Henri Matisse was a French artist, known for his use of bright colours in his artwork. He is mainly known as a painter, but he was also a draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art and in the Fauvism art movement. Matisse even changed his style and medium after an illness in later life.
He died in November 1954.
