Art and Design Rationale
Art and Design teaching should engage, inspire and challenge all pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. It provides children with an alternative form of expression, a visual language with which to communicate their responses. It can increase self-esteem and confidence for all children because Art and Design values diversity of personal response. The Art and Design curriculum has been designed to ensure progress in skills and knowledge from Year 1 to Year 6. Topics have been planned to allows for links to topics in History and Geography. At the beginning of each year children will work on a Portraits unit which allows for a reflective and child centred start to the year, allowing for reflection at this time of transition. Units of 2D and 3D making have been specified to ensure children are revisiting and developing skills in both.
