Welcome to the class page for Oliver Jeffers Class.

Teacher: Daniela Davey

Teacher Assistant: Vera Krasniqi

Oliver Jeffers is a visual artist and author working in painting, bookmaking, illustration, collage, performance and sculpture. Curiosity and humour are underlying themes throughout Oliver's practice as an artist and storyteller. While investigating the ways the human mind understands its world, his work also functions as comic relief in the face of futility. Jeffers’ engagements and practice are truly international in scope. His critically acclaimed picture books have been translated into over forty-five languages, and sold over 12 million copies worldwide. His original artwork has been exhibited at such institutions as the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Palais Auersperg in Vienna. Jeffers has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Books Award, Bologna Rigazzi Award, An Irish Book Award,  and a United Kingdom Literary Association Award. His seventeenth book as author and illustrator was released in September 2019, and he has illustrated several others. Oliver grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland; he currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY

Making a hungry caterpillar fruit salad

We have been reading the story of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and decided to make a delicious fruit salad with the fruits he eats at the beginning of the story. We cut up apples, pears, plums, strawberries and oranges; making sure that we were careful using a knife to slice the fruits. After we enjoyed eating the fruit salad, it was very yummy!

World Book Day!

We celebrated world book day today in our class. All the children enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book character and had a great day making up their own stories together :)

New additions to the class....

This week we have had some new members of the class join.....some little chicks!

The children have enjoyed watching the chicks hatch in the incubator and then grow, learning how to walk and feed themselves. We have been talking about them a lot and have learnt that the yellow chicks will grow into cockerels and the brown chicks will grow into hens.

We can't wait to see them grow some more next week!

Careers week

It has been careers week this week and today the children dressed up as what they would like to be when they are older. We had some doctors, a dentist, builders, singers, shop keepers and even a footballer!

We were also joined by a class parent who talked to the children about her job as a nurse, working with adults in care and all the different parts of being a nurse. We all had our temperatures taken and some of us measured our heart rates too!

Spring term

Jeffers class have been enjoying exploring different textures in our inside and outside learning environments. We have been enjoying using our imaginations when playing with the sand, making 'exploding volcanoes' and also seeing what happens when we mix rice with water and how this changes the textures. It has been a lot of fun!

Weeks 10 and 11

Over the last two weeks we have been busy practising for our Christmas concert for our parents and carers. We sang lots of songs, such as, 'Rudolph the red nosed reindeer', 'We wish you a merry Christmas', and 'Santa claus is coming to town.' We had a lot of fun singing for our audience and everyone had a great time. Well done to all the children!

Week 9

In maths this week, we have been matching numeral to quantity. We have identified the numbers then found the right number of buttons for the gingerbread man or pegs for the spiders' legs. We have also made sure that we are saying each number as we are counting so that we count accurately and carefully.

Week 8

This week in Jeffers class we have been learning about the celebration of Diwali. We have made our own lanterns using bright colours to show light overcoming darkness. We had to fold and snip the paper, then stick it together and make a handle for it. We really enjoyed making them!

Week 7

We have been reading the story 'Kipper's Birthday' this week as part of our new topic, Celebrations. Today, we decorated cakes with chopped fruit. First we washed our hands, next we used a knife to chop bananas and strawberries and finally we put the fruit on top of the cakes and ate them! They were very tasty!

Week 6

We went on a walk this week in the garden in Nursery. Everyone enjoyed looking at all the plants, leaves and ponds, especially the ones with the fish!

Week 5

We have been enjoying reading our books on the carpet this week during the morning when we arrive at school. We can choose our own books, find our carpet spaces and sit quietly reading.

Week 4

This week we have been enjoying our PE lesson, learning about how to find a safe space to begin activities and playing games with each other. We have been using our listening skills very well to listen to instructions during the games. At the end of the lesson, we have been learning how to cool down and relax. Look at our class display of us doing PE!

Week 3

This week, Jeffers class have been practising writing our names! We have been using our name cards to trace the letters in our names, using the correct grip and then write our names on paper. We are learning about the different sounds in our names too and that everyone's name is unique and special to them.

We have been using good team working and sharing skills to make different lego models too! Well done for helping each other :)

Jeffers class have been enjoying doing our 5 a day dances too. We love to be active and show our dance moves!

Week 2

This week, we have started to introduce our topic, 'All About Me'. The children have enjoyed drawing pictures of their favourite toys, animals, food and also who is in their families. They have been able to talk about and share their likes, interests and family news during learning time on the carpet - focusing on good listening to their friends. They have also explored creating faces with playdough, using their hands to shape and mould the dough into ears, noses, eyes and hair! We think they look great :)

Our first week in Reception

We are having a wonderful first week in Jeffers class! The children have been enjoying getting to know each other and the adults they are working with. We have been learning about our new class rules and expectations and listening to some stories by our class author, Oliver Jeffers. Today we were making our own aliens based on the story, 'The Way Back Home'. The children enjoyed cutting, sticking and drawing their own designs for their aliens and speaking about their decisions on how to design their aliens. They look amazing!

Our alien designs

Today, Reception had lunch for the first time in school! The children enjoyed trying the food (especially dessert!) and were practising using their cutlery to cut food and feed themselves. Well done Reception!
